This is one of four artworks made by the artist about people (two friends, a neighbor, and a cousin-in-law) to the artist who were killed at different times by police between 1998 and 2010. This one reflects on her brief friendship with Justin Horton Smith before he was killed in 1998 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The word Paladin is a reference to a story by a promising Black writer, Henry Dumas, who was killed by police on a New York subway in a case of mistaken identity in the 1960s.
