This artwork is in the permanent collection of the California African American Museum. It is based on true historical accounts of an early proto-Panafricanist heroine Kimpa Vita (aka Dona Beatrice, the self-proclaimed reincarnation of Saint Anthony). Kimpa Vita was a major spiritual leader of Congo in the 17th century who advocated an end to the slavetrade. At first tolerated by Congolese royalty, demands from European monks ended up bringing her to the fate of being burned alive for heresy.
