Artwork inspired by a friend's study abroad summer in Beirut in 1999. This painting is one of six about the trip. In this one, as it is early in her trip, the friend is an outsider curious about the interior lives of the local people. Artwork on the text is in Arabic and can be paraphrased as: "In public, people spoke pleasantly about politics and their leaders, but once you got to know them and were invited into private spaces, they whispered criticism because they suspected the government might be wiretapping interior spaces.
